Opening the case, the two shells are covered by two glossy-white aluminium sheets. The bottom shell sheet has a hole in the right side. In this hole there is a little transparent glass box containing fresh rose petals. All the aluminium sheet is covered by fresh rose petals. The top shell sheet contains a rectangular hole (for the screen) The final look is an open metal case with a 15″ touch screen and all surrounded by fresh rose petals. The contents: inside the bottom shell there is the cpu of a laptop equipped with a LAN plug. Inside the top shell there is a 15″ lcd screen equipped with a 15″ touch screen. Inside the harddisk there are all the PHP and html scripts of my netart work. So, instead of doing a ftp to a remote server somewhere on this earth, I have my own code, stored in this « object ». The HD contains also a software allowing the machine to become visible to the www every time it is connected to internet. So it becomes a « server » only when it is plugged. When users come to see the work and it isn’t online, they find a welcome page containing a FAQ section and all the info about the project. Why the rose petals: Though they cause a really beautiful aesthetic impact, the reason why I choose to surround my net sculpture by fresh rose petals is that they are ephemeral as net based works. People buy and take care of flowers even if they know they are gonna die in a few days. I found a point in common with this kind of works. So I decide to equip my case with a space hosting fresh rose petals. Fresh rose petals are integrated in the case and are a fundamental part of the sculpture. When you go away and you want to bring with you the case you have only to gather together those petals, putting them inside the glass box provided and integrated in the case. The point is that you have to take care of your digital works (upgrading software, repairing hardware) as you take care of plants or flowers. Even if the Net will not exist anymore in a few years, people should take care of these net works because they represent a really interesting approach to understand aspects of our contemporary culture. This work is the beta version of an upcoming commission received by Foundation Künstlerdorf Schöppingen (Schöppingen, Germany) and called « Portrait of Four Doctors ». For traffic reasons the work on display at the artfair is a light version of the following one: This project consists in a B/N photo of a person (a portrait) , where, instead of having pupils, it contains images taken from a search engine live query. In facts, the image of his pupils is substituted with some “pixel – images??? refreshing every 30 seconds and displaying new images taken from a Google search. The images coming from the query are resized as 1×1 pixels and linked to pages containing the same image but in real size. This means that pupils are browseable by users that will be able to click on them opening new windows and exploring their content. The right pupil of the portrait is filled with images coming from some fixed queries decided by the collector. This means that the engine will use (randomly) one of those keywords selected in advance to scan the web looking for images. The left pupil of the portrait is filled with images coming from user entries. It means that before joining the project user will be asked to type a query in a form. (this feature is not available in the light version) I think we should look at this portrait as a paradigm of our identity and our social (net) projection.
