iMAL, Center for Digital Cultures and Technology is organising an exciting exhibition in Brussels, 18-30 April 2008.
Holy Fire: Art in the Digital Age will present a unique panel of digital artworks created since 2000 by internationaly known media artists. The exhibition will be featured at iMAL new media center in Brussels (http://www.imal.org/) as part of the « off program » of Art Brussels, the international contemporary art fair ( http://www.artexis.com/ArtBrussels/, April 18 – 21, 2008).

iMAL Center for Digital Cultures and Technology is proud to present Holy Fire. Art of the Digital Age a collective exhibition featuring a unique panel of digital artworks created in the last years by internationally known new media artists, and coming from galleries and collections from around the world (USA, Europe, Russia). Holy Fire is an attempt to explore how new media art, bypassing all the stereotypes connected with its presumed immateriality and difficulties of maintenance, was able to enter the art market.

Artists: Cory ARCANGEL, Gazira BABELI, BOREDOMRESEARCH, Christophe BRUNO, Grégory CHATONSKY, Miguel CHEVALIER, Vuk COSIC, Shane HOPE, JODI, LAb[au], Joan LEANDRE, Golan LEVIN, Olia LIALINA & Dragan ESPENSCHIED, Eva and Franco MATTES aka 0100101110101101.ORG, Alison MEALEY, Mark NAPIER, Casey REAS, Charles SANDISON, Antoine SCHMITT, Yacine SEBTI, Alexei SHULGIN & Aristarkh CHERNYSHEV, John. F. SIMON, Jr., Paul SLOCUM, Wolfgang STAEHLE, Eddo STERN, UBERMORGEN.COM, Carlo ZANNI.

Holy Fire is, in fact, featured into the “Off Program” of Art Brussels, the international contemporary art fair (April 18 – 21, 2008). Taking its cue from this occasion, the exhibition wants to show that new media art is just art of this century, wants to reduce the gap between digital art and contemporary art, and to participate in a broader understanding and acceptance of digital media and cultures.

Art of our Time

The artworks in Holy Fire are not new media art, but simply art of our time: art which appropriates institutional or corporate identities, creates fictional identities, hacks softwares and game engines for its own purposes, infiltrates online or offline communities in order to portray them or their own myths, subverts existing tools or creates its own tools, explores the aesthetics of computation and information spaces; or, more simply, uses computer hardware and software in order to create art which talks about our world.

With the accelerated technological development (e.g. large flat screens, powerful beamers, ubiquitous computing, fast network) and the sociological and cultural acceptance of digital tools and media, new media art is becoming one of the main currents of 21th century art, and is entering into our everyday life in our office, in public or corporate buildings as well as in our home

Collectible Artworks

Holy Fire is probably the first exhibition to show only collectible new media artworks already on the art market, in the form of traditional media (prints, videos, sculptures) or customized new media objects. Holy Fire presents contemporary artworks made with contemporary technologies and designed to be collectible.

Holy Fire, the title of the exhibition is a reference to a well-known book by Bruce Sterling, a book which, among other issues, envision the art of the (at that time, future) digital age. In the same time, the issue makes reference to the passion that helps a growing number of people (artists, curators, gallery owners and collectors) to take care of an art that is temporary and variable by definition.conference and debate:

Flussgeist, Waiting (2007)

Curated by Pau Waelder

Participating artists:

“Be water, my friend” said Bruce Lee in an interview, back in 1971. And, although his words are now part of a BMW ad, this is still a wise advice, particularly for the times we live in. We are immersed in a continuous flow, a flow of information, of events, of images and messages that constantly invade our senses. Everything evolves so quickly that we frequently feel overwhelmed: even if we do our best to be aware of the latest trends, to update our knowledge and stay connected, we cannot keep with the flow. In this state of constant change, established concepts shatter and monolithic structures are slowly but inevitably eroded by a reality that is never the same. The only thing one can do now is “be water”, adapt and evolve, assume that we both step and do not step in the same rivers, but furthermore that we are part of what makes the river flow.

Flow also designates a mental state in which the person is fully involved in the activity he or she is doing. For an artist, this is the particular moment in which inspiration strikes, the idea becomes clear and one cannot stop until the work takes form. Paradoxically, in most cases to create means to fix what has been flowing through one’s mind, and the materials that were once fluid become solid as they integrate the finished artwork. In the digital realm, works retain most of their fluidity, as they feed from ever changing data generated by viewers or website users. But, whether digital or analogue, contemporary artworks move seamlessly from one discipline to another and present us with more questions than certainties.

From drawing and painting to interactive installations and augmented reality displays, the works included in this exhibition present different aspects of the concept of “flow”. Whether by exploring the aesthetic possibilities of representing fluids, by contemplating the flow of data in information networks, experiencing the fluidity of sound, time or space, the flow of life itself and that of the processes that take place in our environment, they form a rich landscape of contemporary creation that mirrors a reality which is anything but stable.

« Internet art projects are art projects for which the Net is both a sufficient and necessary condition of viewing/expressing/participating. Internet art can also happen outside the purely technical structure of the internet, when artists use specific social or cultural traditions from the internet in a project outside of it. Internet art is often, but not always, interactive, participatory and based on multimedia in the broadest sense. »
– definition by Steve Dietz, former curator in new media at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis

Intreractive is a collaborative artform. This can be derived from a sculpture that can be touched or moved, or from a stimulation of heat or motion as well as exploration through hypertext. Most commonly the interation of a digital representation that can be manipulated by the viewer. As a very contemporary medium, it has not been explored or even considered as a notable « fine art », yet. Generally speaking, a typical website could be considered interactive art, what makes this specific medium different and enjoyable?
« Interactive Art can be distinguished from Generative art, Electronic art, or Immersive art in that it is a dialog between the piece and the participant; specifically, the participant has « agency » (the ability to act upon) the piece and is furthermore invited to do so in the context of the piece, i.e. the piece has « affordance » or « affords » the interaction. In contrast, Generative Art tends to be a monologue — the artwork may change or evolve in the presence of the viewer, but the viewer may not be invited to engage in the reaction but « merely » enjoy it. »

In this modern world, we have been conditioned to machines as a part of our everyday lives. Constantly stimulated by multimedia, we have become fast paced and everyone is has seemingly formed a type of « ADD ». With that said, if something does not captivate and hold our attention, we may have a harder time giving a piece more than a few seconds of attention.
Digital Media is responsible for this change in mindframe, as well trying to harness it. Interactive art is a way to express the artists medium as well as incorporating the onlooker. Most began as programs created for children, like in the « Kids Zone Gallery » http://www.nga.gov/kids/zone/ where artwork has the ability to manipulated by the user. Simultaneously, the user learns of great artists, such as Johannes Vermeer, when they can design his studio. This kind of stimulation is kinesthetic as well as teaching with visual aid and giving an element of control to the veiwer.
Which brings me to the element of control in artwork. Artist, generally speaking, create a work with thier personal intiative and viewpoints. They attractive aspect of Interactive Art is the lack of total control. The viewer is a part of the piece and the artist’s difficulty is contriving an inticing, and presumtuous work. It is still the artist vision, but the vision now includes multiple vewipoints.

This curatorial is a small sample of various types of art that necessitates outside interaction. Some are computer, data based and others involve actual touch or movement of the human body.
In « Last Life (Your Life, Your Time) » Gregory Chatonsky has generated a program that detects when you are going to die based on how long you have lived thus far. With that information and you name, it regurgitates a random lifespan. It is a comment on « second life » and very mystical about it. It also keeps a running tabulation of all who have visited.

Eisenstein’s Monster is my favorite. What is more fun than playing God? The concept is creating your own « monster » with attributes that have there own personalities, a sighing eye, or nose with a themesong. » Eisenstein’s Monster’ is a participatory video piece, a tongue-in-cheek coupling of Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ and the montage theories of Sergei Eisenstein. » As Eisenstein is a filmmaker and theorists who was famous for his use of photo montage. Which is what this work is about, a montage of attributes.

« Delicate Boundaries is an interactive installation where human touch can dissolve the barrier of the computer screen. Using the body as a means of exchange, the system explores the subtle boundaries that exist between foreign systems and what it might mean to cross them. Lifelike digital animations swarm out of their virtual confinement onto the skin of a hand or arm when it makes contact with a computer screen creating an imaginative world where our bodies are a landscape for digital life to explore. » This is a intresting coehisitance of human and machine. Fascinating that the « little lights » are so attracted to the human touch. On the contrary, its almost like a disease crawling up your arm.

This Artificial Life span determiner is based on combining input variables with statistical and random values. You plug in your « stats » and habits (ie vegetarian, smoker) and then it spits out the major happenings of your life until you die, even giving statistics of how many people ar going to be inhabniting the world. Unfortunately, I could not access the end of the program…so maybe I die sooner than I think? Another smart presumptuous data interaction.

« Scale presents a struggling vertebraic object which scratches the surface it is mounted to. This object is always in motion but not locomotive: as the viewer approaches the object it moves faster but cannot escape its situation. Placed along the walls are 20 amplifier boxes, which broadcast the sounds of the object’s attempts at self-determined ambulation. Under the objects outer branches sound is picked up by contact microphones that are linked to the amplifiers through a network of audio cables. The reactive and kinetic components are comprised of a light sensor embedded in the object, servo motors, and a micro-controller. Together these elements make up a elementary sensing and responding system, alluding to our own more complex internal systems of perception and action, yet stripped bare exposing itself as a network where the signal’s path can be traced. » The human presence around this creepy, insect type system of branches and scratching and sound. Something I would not want to step on in the middle of the night. The sensory persception of the receptors is intriguing. But I have not quite figured out its purpose, maybe just to give the viewer the jitters?

Deterministic Nonperiodic Flow is » a large-scale hexagonal grid of rotating units demonstrates a number of phenomena; such as pattern formation, magnetic forces and the trajectories within a dynamical system. Magnetic forces in each of the rotating arms cause a chain reaction of movement – affecting neighbour units and moving across the grid. Participants are invited to interact with the sculpture by turning the units, which produces movements along unpredictable lines. A projection on the wall shows the spreading of the movement in realtime through the application of a motion detection filter that manipulates an overhead video feed. » It is rather poetic and I would really like to see this in the flesh. The charge of human touch, energy; to magnetic system to generate imagery and sound. A full body experience. Everything is creating.

The experiences of intereactive art are ones that leave a more satisfied feeling for both the viewer and the artist. The artist enables the veiwer to assist in creating. Everyone wins. In this modern world, it is hard to be unique and original. Interactive art is an open plain that will probably continue to be explored.

In addition, after researching the interactive arts, I stumbled upon a school of interactive, digitized online art courses. The Interactive Art School: http://www.interactiveartschool.com/index.html About $1000 and you can pace yourselves over two and a half years. They even give you a digital camera to document your work and then the critiques happen with diagrams and detail specificty of the stuents artwork. An alternative (and affordable) option to go to Art school.

Eisenstein’s Monster
By Chris Joseph
Totally fun, everyone enjoys contriving monsters! Especially when it involves montage inspired of the great theorist Sergey Eisenstien. What is really interesting is the unique video and sound each individual piece of anatomy makes.

A young woman is in her room. She seems sick. Sometimes she looks better. Sometimes she is really sick. Each way she behaves seem to react to a secret way. As day goes by she have trouble breathing, she calms down and then she stands and collapses. Everything starts all over again.
Somewhere else people are dying or hurted, governments are overthrowed or voted out of the office, some raw materials become scarce, negociations are in the process, treaties are signed. Everything starts all over again.

http://incident.net/users/gregory/wordpress/04-economie-0/

Google Art, or How to Hack Google is an online exhibition that explores artists responses to one of the Internet’s most visible institutions. In an information-based age, the ability to discover relevant and valuable information in a seemingly infinite amount of irellevant data represents an unquestionable advantage. Search engines shape the way information is organized and accessed, modulate the exchange of web traffic, and have the ability to singlehandedly create new semantics and meanings. Currently, no search engine has more influence than Google. Google, however, is more than just a search engine — it has inserted itself into nearly every web-based activity. By developing competitive « live » applications the site encourages new kinds of social behavior. Google Art, or How to Hack Google explores Google’s normative role through a selection of Web-based projects and illustrates the effects and consequences of the search engine’s power: ad hacks that attempt to foil Google’s seemingly unflappable business machinery, re-interpretations of search results that produce new semantics, imaginative remixing of its tools, data re-visualizations or ways to alter Google’s world map with activist aims or narrative goals.

Curated by Ana for Rhizome.

Traces of a Conspiracy

Gregory Chatonsky’s Traces of a Conspirancy is an unconventional approach to Google Maps: Chatonsky explores the narrative potential of the tool by combining it with traditional narrative. Traces of a Conspirancy is a generative fiction about an imaginary conflict deriving from reconstituted texts that link to Google Maps satellite images and featuring pictures from Flickr. As a result, Chatonsky creates a narrative from the flow of the network. Traces of a Conspirancy is also a reflection of the surveillance paranoia provoked by tools such as Google Maps as well as the overwhelming overexposure to not always reliable information.

SOUND OF FAILURE
Experimental Music in a Post-digital Era

We live in an era of failure. On the global stage, the President of the most powerful country on earth has overseen thousands of deaths in two failed wars. In the third world the stench of poverty seeps through the pores of humanity in the guise of genocidal skirmishes, starvation and disease. Fundamentalists of all creeds goad each other like contestants on some new deadly reality TV show. And the optimism of the ’90s is washed away in a tide of apathy, indifference and hopelessness.

So where does this leave culture? If art is holding up a mirror to society, how long before the mirror shatters in sympathetic resonance to the horror it beholds?

A couple of months ago Don’t Look Gallery put out an open call to sound artists to propose a piece for an event called the ‘Sound of Failure’. From dozens of responses, 20 artists have been chosen to perform at Petersham Bowling Club on Saturday August 25, or to install works at Don’t Look Gallery, Dulwich Hill over the weekend of August 25/26.

These works generally employ technological failure, both as a euphemism for the state of the world, but also as a way of exposing, exploring and problematising the digital façade. These artists have attempted transcend the small rectangular screens and the latest Microsoft releases, opting instead to look at unintended consequences of technology – when it misbehaves or just gives up the goat.

Some artists use humour. Starella, for instance, juxtaposes ‘instruments’ such as ‘old wine bottles’ with digital technology and lyrics written on the backs of beer coasters. The failure in her musical sound comes from spending her life slipping through the gaps of every system she has known: family; society, and professional systems. In her performances she feels her way through drunken rants and musically attempts to determine what went wrong.

Others employ the literal failure of the technology itself. Tom Hall, a sound artist from Brisbane, uses the degenerate sounds formed from the destruction of flimsy CD media combined with the glitch/skip/malfunction from ageing and damaged CD players. These form the basis of a live performance that combine in a progressive and layered manner, juxtaposing the usual frustration experienced when one strikes this inferior malfunction.

A detailed program is available from http://soundoffailure.com

Avec Armel Barraud, Gregory Chatonsky, Alexis Chazard, Marie Daubert, Marika Dermineur, Reynald Drouhin, Elodie Le Coldroch, Julie Morel, RYBN, Michaël Sellam, Gwenola Wagon.

« Black out » de Reynald Drouhin, 2006
Vidéo, 4 min 20.

« L’idiot » de Julie Morel, 2000
Vidéo, 15 min.

« .SRT » de RYBN, 2006
Vidéo, 6 min (extrait).

« Community of Desire » de Michaël Sellam, 2006

This exhibition presents artwork that incorporates issues of identity by using the image as a mode of articulating, and from this coming to terms with, memory and location. Here, place is understood in literal terms: landscape/nature/urban/rural and also in broader terms: interior/house/virtual/body. What is it about these kinds of places that makes us want to remember things and, moreover, how can such places give rise to other memories that we bring to the image, and also self?

Introduction by Tetsuo Kogawa, Art on the Net Guest Director Theodor W. Adorno said all culture after Auschwitz is garbage. After September 11, all art could only turn into the fumes of debris or garbage, no longer holding any kind of forms after being severely burnt. Literally, this was an event through which the declaration of the ending of « art, » which Adorno masochistically hoped for, was declared. Adorno’s garbage was still recyclable and displayable. That was why what he called « culture industry » recuperated the garbage endlessly to supply the « artworks » to the market. Galleries and museums managed to preserve the in-the-name-only method of exhibiting the works by extrapolating authorities of critics and connoisseurs, and auras of the tradition. Multimedia was welcomed for a while at the end of the 20th century as one of efficient methods of supporting this preservation. And thus came the multimedia art. Fundamentally, however, the Internet is open to all, and authority and aura do not belong there. The Internet is a post-art technology that makes the « Adornist recovery of garbage » impossible. The Internet marked the end of the 19th century style « art. » Broadband may appear a materialization of the multimedia dream of the past, but as long as it remains an open medium for all, authority and auras are ruled out. Art on the Net first began as a challenging attempt to eliminate the exhibition element, which then had been already relativized by Walter Benjamin. It was a denial of the art as « fine arts » that are to be re-presented in the institutional gallery space. It was a deconstruction of exhibition through artists’ voluntary act to construct a virtual « exhibition space. » Even after art became « garbage, » the structure that artworks have always been in existence as « substances » and that they were re-presented by the viewers remained unchanged. Art on the Net gave a fatal blow to this structure. However, we still have a vestige of conventional art exhibitions — a system that embraces competition and judging. We have witnessed the September 11. Shouldn’t we move a step further and eliminate this system of competing and judging all together? The system of election by mutual vote is a tentative one. There remains an element of judging and the works are still rated. However, we believe welcoming all contestants to be judges would deconstruct the system of judging and rating to move toward cooperation and reconciliation. We’d like to use this system this year as the first step toward more progressive reviewing method.

Choosing the labyrinth as the subject of the exhibition stems from an experience of navigating in virtual space. It also takes into account the kind of open spaces available in Old Äcco. The word Labyrinth has a connotation of ³getting lost², confusion, loss of orientation. The Labyrinth as a metaphor, assumes a search process, whereby those inside it cannot see its end. The Labyrinth image offers an analogy to the Hypermedia technology in a format organizing the information text, image or sound, – as well as in the viewer¹s experience of meandering/navigating in virtual space and in the physical space of the Halls of the Knights in Äcco. The Exhibition will be characterized by a contemporary, technological look, so that the meeting point with the architecture of Old Äcco will create an intriguing visual tension. IMAC computers will be placed within the space, and their original design will form the basis for the design of the exhibition¹s space. Eight large screens will hang widely spread in the exhibition space and will enable movement of the visitors / viewers between them. The Exhibition space will be mostly dark, and the light will emanate mainly from the computer screens and the video projectors

Manifesta 4 will be constructed from that diverse mapping in a complex process and in close collaboration with all the people involved. ++++ Three distinct vectors are intended to articulate Manifesta 4. The artists, the mediating curators and the City of Frankfurt are reinforcing and supporting each other in order to create a dialogue, a flux among each other stressing the diverse individual realities and the way people work together and confront different situations. Manifesta 4 is interested in the articulation of non-similarities and subjectivities, rather than in neutralizing them. ++++ Manifesta 4 is also interested in the ways art is confronted by other contemporary cultural practices intertwined with social and political issues in very different territories. Instead of dealing with binary oppositions (interior/exterior, exclusion/inclusion) or stressing national identities, our project tries to establish a more rhizomic structure which can relate one project to another, one group to another and both to the physical place. We are working on a structure located at that transitory moment when a certain practice displaces itself from one territory to another. ++++ As a trajectory through the city of Frankfurt, the Manifesta 4 Project will reveal the contradictions of the present, the different ways artists are rethinking the classical relation between time and space in the experience of urbanity, dwelling, mobility, travel, exile, language, conversation and translation, endurance, memory and history without forgetting irony and a sense of good, trespassing humour. The topography of the exhibition suggests a movement between such points as Frankensteiner Hof, the Frankfurter Kunstverein, the public spaces around the Schirn Kunsthalle, Portikus, the Städel Museum, the Städelschule, and also the banks of the River Main, subway stations in the heart of the city. Apart from situating itself amongst the physical realities of the city, Manifesta 4 is present through broadcasting by the Hessische Rundfunk (radio and tv), Radio X, Offener Kanal Frankfurt/Offenbach.

MobileGaze proposes a thematically curated Web exhibition entitled Matter & Memory. Inspired by Henri Bergson’s book of the same name, Matter & Memory attempts to look at notions of somatic and psychological modes of being while investigating how « presence » is both re-presented and experienced in cyberspace. This investigation will touch upon the myriad definitions, representations, and affirmations of physical and spiritual human presence as embodied on the Web today. Developed around familiar themes converging to map out our existence or « presence », the exhibition will be divided into 4 sections (Nodes) entitled: Mind, Body, Heart, and Soul. These four thematic Nodes compose seminal notions of embodied and disembodied forms of « presence » charting a complete, yet not exhaustive, representation of existence on the Web. Matter & Memory aims to investigate how Web art culture defines « presence » within the physical, conceptual, philosophical and imaginary.

The first IMMA net.art open over 160 net.art projects – a snapshot of the state of net.art now. http://www.irishmuseumofmodernart.com/ As the museum of modern art confronts the reality of works produced in digital media, it must meet yet another challenge to the integrity and logic of its method of presenting art. Throughout the past century, the museum’s traditional role as the framer of single and valuable objects has been challenged by artists who embrace technologies of mass reproduction, who appropriate everyday objects, or who create ephemeral work. Consequently, the institution has had to continually find new means of maintaining its control, value, and identity. If we accept the idea that a museum is an institution that enhances and, some might even say, creates art by framing objects and images, then the museum must respond to digital artists who demand new ways of framing their work. With this in mind I knew that it was time for the museum to relinquish control both of the way the work was shown and the selection of the work to be shown. This control was turned over to the artists themselves. We have avoided overblown design using a minimal interface to focus in on giving access to the work as quickly as possible. The exhibition contains 160 net.art pieces from 160 artists. All net.art submitted was accepted and only work submitted is included, no work was added by the curator. Finally the work is shown in the order in which it was submitted there is no significance in the positioning of any project on the page, I also recommend using the randomiser to view projects randomly. Artie Doyle Director of Virtual Curating Irish Museum of Modern Art

Internet was born to be a powerful tool of information exchange and simultaneous collaboration among people from different places in the world. Throughout its development those who have lost sight of this fundamental fact have failed or are destined to do so. This is not the case of digital artists who, from the beginnings of this new artistic expression, have focused their efforts and creativity on a participative, collaborative and interactive direction. Digital Jam is a selection of 11 projects conceived for the Internet that shows different tendencies of artistic investigation, focused on the collaborative aspect of the creative process on-line in the course of the last 7 years. The participative experience in digital art has very deep roots going back to Nam June Paik’s experiences at the beginning of the 70’s. However, regarding net.art, one of the first was American artist Douglas Davies with The World’s First Collaborative Sentence, a multimedia document whose development and expansion depend on the audience who, since 1994, adds text, sound, images and video. That year, the artistic community sensitive to innovative projects discovered to have a means at their disposal, which shortened distances and changed completely the concept of work of art and copyright and, of course, began to use it. We are not in favour of encyclopaedic selections, so we’d rather risk choosing a series of projects which, in our opinion, shows the numerous tendencies in the field of artistic collaboration on-line. Within the historic ones, we have chosen Davies and Paul Vanouse and their database of secrets and excluded undoubtedly interesting works, such as The Most Wanted Painting by Komar & Melamid and Please Change Belief by Jenny Holzer. French artist Gregory Chatonsky and Americans Marek Walczak and Martin Wattenberg take sides in the discussion of digital art collections, and Eric Zimmerman explores the dynamics of the interpersonal relations on-line with an addictive and evil game. Andy Deck allows to perform a graphic jam session in real time, Hannes Niepold suggests a collaborative net.comic in constant growth and Bernd Holzhausen keeps on expanding his famous Icontown, a city made of pixel buildings by thousands of icon-addicts. Thomax Kaulmann presents its already historic Open Radio Archive Network Group and John Klima challenges the usual model of interactivity and collaboration on the Internet with Glasbead. Finally, No/E.html, a webring by Mexican artist Arcangel Costantini, links with mythical works such as Desktop IS or Refresh by Russian artist Alexey Shulgin, webrings of artists pages from all over the world, which we have excluded because they have lost several intermediate rings and they are immediately interrupted. Digital Jam invites the observer/user to leave his/her passive role in order to take part in first person in this creative jam session on the Internet.

Exposition d’ « Incident of the Last Century 1999 Sampling Sarajevo », commissionné par Frank Popper à l’Espace Landowski (Boulogne-Billancourt, France).

Artistes participants à l’exposition: Jean-Louis Boissier, Grégory Chatonsky, Edmond Couchot, Michel Bret, Fred Forest, Jean-Pierre Giovanelli, Piotr Kowalski, Sophie Lavaud, Marie-Hélène Tramus.
