"T A X I" est un travail photographique sur la ville de Dakar, réalisé en mai 2004.

Les prises de vues ont été réalisées dans tous les taxis que j'ai pris pour déambuler dans la presqu'île, alors que je travaillais pour la Biennale de Dak'Art. Cette animation, dont le rythme oscille entre la photo et la vidéo, n'est autre que la trace, le reflet, la mémoire de ces allers et venues quotidiens. Une silhouette, une ombre, un regard furtif... Autant d'instants entre vitesse et répétition.

Il y a deux manières d'approcher ce travail: en attendant le chargement progressif des images qui se succèdent, c'est-à-dire selon le flux de la connexion à Internet, ou bien une fois celles-ci chargées, comme les instants présents d'une promenade en taxi. Selon certains scientifiques, le présent dure trois secondes. Chacune des 274 images s'imprime 3 secondes dans votre rétine, ce qui représente au total une animation d'un peu moins d'un quart-d'heure, soit le temps moyen d'un parcours en taxi.

"T A X I" is a photographic work about the city of Dakar, created in May 2004.

These are photographs I shot from taxis, moving in and around the city-peninsula, on my way to and from work at the Dak'Art Biennale. This animation, which oscillates somewhere between photography and video, is nothing more than a trace, a reflection and the memory of those daily comings and goings. A silhouette, a shadow, a furtive glance... infinitessimal moments between speed and repetition, each one unique.

There are two ways to approach this work. Either by letting the flux of your internet connection control the rhythm at which the images are loaded, or else, waiting until all the images have loaded and running the animation at regular speed, like an idealised Dakar taxi ride. According to some scientists, the present lasts three seconds. Each of the 274 images is imprinted on your retina for three seconds, making the total length of the animation about 15 minutes, about the length of my daily commute in Dakar.
